Some people had came to the door and Jem had answered and told Atticus that they were looking for him.
"He's taking the car"
"Jem, shouldn't we be going to bed by now?
"He in there Mr. Finch?"
Atticus was explaining to Scout about groups and gangs because they thought that the people that he was talking to was a gang.
"He is, and he's asleep. Don't wake him up."
They were having their evening meal and Atticus walked in with a long extension cord, and said he was leaving. The kids were confused because he has never done something like this.
Jem and Scout saw Atticus taking the car, which was very unusual. Atticus told them to go to bed, but they both decided that they were going to go into town and see what was going on,
Atticus went down to Tom Robinson's cell to read to him. While he was reading he had some trouble come to him. They wanted to mess with Tom but Atticus stopped them. Jem, Scout, and Dill were not far away watching everything go down.
Scout started talking to the guys and proved to Mr. Cunningham that he wouldn't want his son to see him doing this like how Scout would see Atticus. Jem also was standing up for his dad. Atticus told him to go home while Jem stayed where he was and didn't leave. While they were heading home, Dill and Scout were behind the other two and they seemed to notice that Atticus was very proud of his son.
