Evidence 1: "The spotlight on his porch suddenly goes out. There's a murmur from the group."
Theme: Sometimes, mankind is it's own worst enemy.
We should check and see which ones of us are really human.
Evidence 2: "I've already explained it to you people. I don't sleep very well at night. I get up and I take a walk and look up at the sky, I look at the stars!"
Evidence 3: "Well I guess what we'd better do then is to run a check on the neighborhood and which ones of us are really human."
It's the aliens!
it was you!!!
This evidence proves that the theme sometimes "mankind is it's own worst enemy" can be true. When the aliens were controlling the lights, it confused the residents and they created their own dilemma. Sometimes little things that frustrate people can lead to arguments and I think the author is trying to say that. If they listened to each other instead of arguing like children, they would've solved the problem a lot faster. For example, evidence 1 quotes:"The spotlight on his porch suddenly goes out. There's a murmur from the group." The murmur from the group means that everyone was scared and they knew that something wasn't right. At first,They thought that Steve was the monster and they incriminated him even though he had nothing to do with it which shows that they were solving the problem like children would. Evidence 2 was that Goodman tried informing the crowd that he has insomnia but they wouldn't believe him because they assumed he was lying to protect himself and his wife. These reasons substantiate the theme and provide examples as to why mankind is sometimes it's own worst enemy.
