Henry O. Flipper was born at Thomasville, Georgia on March 21, 1856. He was born as a slave.
Henry attended school at the American Missionary Association. When he was a freshman at Atlanta University in 1873, he was appointed to the U.S military Academy.
He was the fifth black person accepted in the academy. Henry was the first out of the five to graduate from West Point.
He was an officer in the Tenth Cavalry. Flipper served at Fort Elliot, Concho, Quitman, and Davis.
Henry O. Flipper created a road from Gainesville to Fort Still. He had to do this because some of the Fourth United States Cavalry got drunk and stopped the road.
Henry helped escort Quanah Parker to Fort Still in the winter of 1878-79. Also fought in two wars during Victorio Campaign.
