This is a small comic showing the way Esperanza goes from disrespectful to thoughtful throughout the book.

Esperanza took her porcelain doll out of her valise to look at. A little girl ran up to her, asking if she could hold the doll. Esperanza would not let her hold it because she was "poor and dirty." The little girl cried and Esperanza's mother apologized to the little girl's mother. Mama was surprised by how disrespectful Esperanza had been.

Esperanza had just been introduced to their new cabin. Everyone knew it was small, but they were just thankful that they had shelter. But Esperanza wasn't. She lost her temper when Mama was singing. She shouted "Mama, we are living like horses!" Mama was shocked by her daughter's rude behavior.

Esperanza is looking at her hands one night after a long day at work. She had put a mixture on them to attempt in making them smooth and soft, but they were still rough and scratched. As she is looking at them, she realizes that they won't look like a wealthy person's. They will looks like a peasant's, and she accepts that.
At one point in the book, Isabel was hoping to be Queen of the May for her school. She was not chosen, thanks to the fact that she was Mexican. She came home crying. Esperanza comforted her and even gave her the porcelain doll that Papa had given to her. Isabel was very thankful for Esperanza's thoughtfulness.
Esperanza and Miguel went to drop off Marta at her camp when a man and his family talk to Marta about staying here in the camp and telling her how they came here. At one point, he tells Marta that his family has not had much to eat. Esperanza gives her newly bought beans to the man just so he can feed his family.
The immigration officials were taking people away. After, when Esperanza was going to get rubber bands (to tie the asparagus) she found Marta hiding behind the bins. Marta asked Esperanza to not get her caught. Esperanza brought her an apron and a bundle of asparagus so she could disguise Marta as a worker. At the end, she is thoughtful.
