Giovanni moved to an apartment in Italy which overlooked a garden owned by Dr. Rappaccini.
"Giovanni still found no better occupation than to look down into the garden beneath his window."

Giovanni meets Beatrice in the garden and falls in love with her. Then, Baglioni warns him of Rappaccini and tells him to stay away.
Giovanni comforts Beatrice in the garden and tells her he is also poisonous. He blames Beatrice for exposing him to the poisons and he becomes quite angry towards her. She explains that she never intended to kill him and his heart, like many others, craves love.
My dear Beatrice, I have this antidote. It will cure us both.
Give it to me! I will drink it!
Beatrice takes the antidote and falls totally ill and dies in the garden.
