Storyboard Text

  • I am Dred Scott, a missouri slave
  • Dred Scott sued for his freedom because he had lived with his master for a period of time in Illinois and Wisconsin (both free)
  • Since I've spent so much time in the free states I should be a free man
  • When he returned to Missouri, Scott sued the state based on his belief.
  • Many slaves who had lived in free territories had gone to court and gained their freedom, and Dred Scott believed he should be able to do the same.
  • When Scott sued for his freedom, the U.S. Supreme Court had to decide if slaves were able to gain freedom just by living in a free territory.
  • Missouri supreme court turned down his decision and the case was lost (an outbreak of the American Civil War)
  • This case gave the Supreme Court the opportunity to make a national statement either for or against slavery.
