Patient HM falls off his bike at a young age and hits his head this causes him to start having seizures
Despite trying all the medication for seizures nothing was working so he decided to go see a surgeon.
HM went to a doctor named William Scoville where he tried an experimental surgery on HM that involved removing the entire hippocampus
Dr Milner came in to form a case study on HM as he was experiencing retrograde amnesia. The aim of this study was to better understand the effects that the surgery had on HM.
Milner conducted multiple different tests on HM such as psychometric tests, interviews and cognitive testing.
One of the tests involved HM drawing a star while looking in a mirror to test his procedural memory, which worked and he got better and better at it
Some of the important findings from HM's case include:-The hippocampus plays a critical role in converting memories of experiences from STM to LTM.-STM is not stored in the hippocampus-Implicit memory contains several stores - for example, procedural memory, emotional memory and skills and habits. Each of these areas is related to different brain areas.
