Starr Carter's best friend Khalil is pulled over by a white police officer, and Khalil is unarmed. When Khalil is reaching for his hairbrush the officer shoots him thinking the brush is a weapon. When the cop pulls them over Starr remembers something very significant, "Get a good look at the cop's face. If you can remember his badge number, that's even better." this was something her dad told her.
Starr sees an interview on TV with the police officers father, during the interview the cops father gives inaccurate information about what occurred, when Starr sees this she realizes she needs to face her fear of speaking out and testifying for a district attorney about the incident.
Starr gives an interview on TV and mentions King, a garden heights drug dealer. A drive-by shooting occurs at the carter home after Starrs interview, which is intended to warn her about snitching on his gang.
Starr ignores the warning and testifies for a grand jury.
The grand jury decides not to indict the officer, and violence breaks out. Starr bravely speaks to a crowd about unjust police violence and amount of attention to Khalil's death.
