Storyboard Text

  • Ukraine must be a democracy for the sake of Europe.
  • I declare Crimea as Russian land!
  • Reactor Four is melting down!
  • Because Ukraine has an important geopolitical location, the U.S. sought to increase Ukraine’s peaceful relations with its neighbors. The United States thought that if Ukraine became a democracy, other countries in the region would follow suit and bring more prosperity to the region.  The U.S. planned to utilize Ukraine's natural resources.
  • Ukraine is now free!
  • Russia gifted Crimea to Ukraine near the start of the Cold War.  Russia annexed it back in 2014. Tense relations between Russia and Ukraine along with the rest of NATO are one major effect of this exchange.
  • Chernobyl was a nuclear power plant in Ukraine used by the Soviet Union during the Cold war.  It melted down during a check of its efficiency. The meltdown has caused serious environmental damage that made the area surrounding the power plant unsuitable to live in for a few decades.
  • An unsuccessful coup in Moscow caused the end of the Cold War in the USSR.  The coup prompted the dissolution of the USSR and the gaining of independence of Ukraine and other countries in the Soviet Union.
  • After Ukraine gained its independence, a series of corrupt and kleptocratic leaders caused the government to only do half of what is needed for a stable economy.  Because of their lack of action, the per capita GDP of Ukraine only rose from five thousand to seven thousand in three decades, as opposed to Poland going from five thousand to twenty-three thousand.
