  • Step 3
  • Algae
  • Dying plants
  • A farmer puts fertilizers in their fields. Then when it rains the crops grow and the fertilizer soaks into groundwater.
  • Step 4
  • The water starts to get filled with extra phosphates and nitrates because of the fertilizer. The extra phosphate and nitrate levels cause  algal blooms to occur.
  • Step 5
  •  The algal blooms begin to cover lakes almost entirely so no sunlight can get it. Without sunlight, less oxygen can get into the water and plants cannot perform photosynthesis.
  • Step 6
  • Algae and other plants also begin to die because of the oxygen eating bacteria.
  • Dying off plants and algae
  • Once the algae begins to die, oxygen eating bacteria multiplies and even more of the oxygen is consumed. The more oxygen consumed, the more bacteria can multiply and multiply
  • Multiplying oxygen eating bacteria
  • Fish begin dying below the surface because the oxygen eating bacteria are at a point where the fish begin suffocating because of the lack of oxygen.
