Macbeth meets with the three witches for them to inform him that he is now the Thane of Cawdor
King Duncan thanks Macbeth and Banquo for their bravery in fighting the war, in which they also profess their loyalty to Duncan. He also announces that Malcolm will heir his throne. This bothers Macbeth because he wants to be king.
Duncan goes to Macbeth's castle with his attendants for dinner. He thanks Lady Macbeth for her geniality, then goes inside to greet Macbeth.
Lady Macbeth has an idea, her idea is for Macbeth to murder Duncan inside their castle. Macbeth is hesitant to do so at first, in which Lady Macbeth calls him a coward and not manly.
