By JD Engel THE DRED SCOTT CASE Red Block 1
I am Dred Scott. I am a slave born from Virginia. In 1833, I was sold to Dr. John Emerson, and taken to the Wisconsin Territory, where slavery is illegal. After many years, I moved with Dr. Emerson, my wife, and my children to St. Louis. When Dr. Emerson died, me and my family went to court to fight for freedom.
I tried to sue the court claiming that me and my family were legally free since we lived in a territory where slavery was banned, but they then said that negros are not citizens.
NEGROS ARE NOT CITIZENS!!!
Outside the court, people were arguing about whether slaves should be citizens.
Eventually, they told the public that they decided that slaves are not citizens. I guess my fight for freedom is done. I lost, but I can tell this is not over.
