Back in Soledad, Lennie grabbed a girl's dress which made her feel really uncomfortable. She screamed and ran to some guys she knew to tell them what happened. They hunted down George and Lennie for a while. Luckily, George and Lennie out ran them and made it to an irrigation ditch to hide in.
He ain't mean, I can tell a mean guy a mile off.
While George and Lennie were meeting the boss, Lennie wasn't allowed to talk. So when the boss asked Lennie questions, George answered them. This became suspicious to the boss which made him think George was taking Lennie's pay. George quickly denies this and tells the boss he is taking care of Lennie because he's mentally challenged.
The way I'd shoot him, he wouldn't feel even quiver.
George tells Lennie to jump off a cliff into a river. Lennie actually listened and started to drown! George had to pull him out of the river and Lennie totally forgot what happened. This taught George to never want to mess around with Lennie again.
Come on, ya big bastard. Get up on your feet. No son-of-a-b*tch is gonna laugh at me.
While George is talking to Slim, he brings up what happened in Soledad. He says that Lennie wouldn't let go of the girl's dress because he was panicking and didn't know what to do. The girl got really scared because Lennie is so big and strong. Apparently, she told the law she was raped which is obviously an exaggeration. Slim was shocked by this story because Lennie is such a harmless guy with no bad intentions.
When Carlson walks into the bunkhouse, he blames the horrible smell on Candy's dog. He tell's Candy that the dog is miserable and probably doesn't want to live in the condition it's in. After a lot of convincing, Candy allows Carlson to shoot his dog. Carlson took the dog outside and moments later, he shot it. Candy obviously was upset about this.
Curley thinks Lennie is laughing at him even though he isn't. He exploded irately because he hates to be laughed at. Curley started throwing punches at Lennie, scaring him. Since no one was stopping Curley, Lennie held on to Curley's fist so tightly that he broke his hand!
