In the exposition of the book "The Crossing" by Gary Paulsen, the main character Manny is a homeless boy trying to cross the border into America. He begs on the streets in order to survive and meets Maria, a kind older woman, who owns a restaurant. "If he stood long enough and smiled in the shy way, Old Maria would sometimes hand him a tortilla and he could get some beans from the pot if he was lucky, and that would cut away the hunger for a time." (Page 6) He is able to get by anticipating the life changing trip that lies ahead of him.
WHY WERE YOU TRYING TO STEAL MY WALLET!?!?!?
In the rising action Manny discovers an area where crowds would come together. "At first dark, the people who would cross in the night started to gather. Hundreds of them would congregate in groups and singles with small bags of clothing and food and wait in the rocks for when it seemed right." (Page 36) They all want to get into America to fulfill their dreams. Unfortunately, the border patrol is skilled and knows how to prevent this illegal entrance from happening.
As Manny rushes for the border with the huge crowd, he ends up getting caught by some members of a local Mexican gang called the Coyotes. Manny punches and kicks and somehow manages to escape and run off . "It was not a good night. He was away from them, but the rest of the night was not good. He had not crossed and could not do so now -- it was too close to light." (Page 46) He was extremely lucky to be alive, but now he would need to find another way of crossing the border.
Manny encounters Robert S. Locke, an alcoholic American military sergeant, making his way out of a bar. "It might be that I can move on him like a night animal and reach into his pocket and get his wallet." (page 48) Manny gets caught but Robert has compassion for him and they develop a friendship.
