Storyboard Text

  • The Humoral Response
  • How our immune system protects us from diseases.
  • Pathogens that enter the body are taken in and then the chemicals in them are broken apart by the phagocyte.
  • The helper T-cell then attaches and binds to a piece of the pathogen that was presented by the phagocyte.
  • Cell Mediated Response
  • Adaptive Immunity
  •
  •
  • Then pieces of the pathogen are presented on the outside of the phagocyte and helper T-cells appear.
  • Finally, the helper T-cell releases a chemical signal that activates other immune response systems.
  •
  •
  • Those pieces of the pathogen that were presented by the phagocyte are also known as antigens.
  • One of these is effector T cells.
  • The other one is memory T cells, which stay in the body in case the pathogen comes back.
  • Those antigens then activate the helper-T-cells, causing it to rapidly divide into two types of daughter cells.
  • B-cells bind themselves to pathogens that have entered the body.
  • The antigen is then presented on the surface of the B-cell.
  • The B-cells then absorb and break apart the pathogens.
  • The helper T-cell then attaches to the antigen presented on the B-cell, activating it.
  • One type of those daughter cells are plasma cells, which make antibody molecules.
  • The B-cell then rapidly divides, creating two types of daughter cells.
  • The other type of those daughter cells are memory B-cells that stay in the body to respond to the pathogen if it ever returns to the body.
  • Because those memory B-cells and memory T-cells stay in your body after you are sick, when you get the same sickness again your body already knows and remembers how to create the antibodies to fight it, essentially rendering you immune
