The morning before Frederick and his friends put their escape plan into action, Frederick went down to eat breakfast. While he was at breakfast, he noticed a large man that were standing to the side.“Do you have any idea what that man is are doing over there?” Frederick whispered to his friend, John.“I don’t know why he’s here, but I can tell you that he is a constable; basically just a police officer.” Frederick didn’t feel quite right about the men, especially when they walked over to him and asked him a question.“Excuse me sir, but I believe that you have gotten into a scrape with some of your fellow slaves. If you could just come with me, we will make sure that this whole thing gets cleared up.”Frederick didn’t feel right about the situation, but he didn’t want to seem suspicious by not going with the man, so he told his friends to follow him.
Almost immediately after walking into the room that the constables led him to, they hit all of them and tied Frederick to a chair. Before he knew it, John had also been tied down. But Henry; Henry was doing something that he had never seen before out of another slave… Henry was resisting!“Sit down in that chair or I swear I will send you to jail for the rest of your life!” Screamed the constable.“Send me to prison! Send me to prison for the rest of my life! I would rather be there for the rest of my life then spend another day here!”Amongst the commotion, Frederick realized his opportunity to dispose of the fake slip from “William Hamilton” and tossed it into the fire, destroying the only piece of evidence that the constables had. After Frederick looked back up, Henry had been tied down and the constables walked over to Frederick and began to search him, coming up empty.“This man is guilty. I know it. Send him and the rest of his friends to jail for life.”
Frederick’s fighting hope of escaping slavery had disappeared. His final chance to escape had ended in failure; so how could any man not? Henry suggested trying to escape, but Frederick quickly shot down the idea and said the best thing for all of them would be to stay in the prison. The next morning, Henry and John asked what they should do with their own slips. “Own nothing” Frederick muttered as he did a motion that meant eat it. About a week later, a man showed up to the prison saying that he was looking for Frederick, who Frederick quickly recognised was his old master; Mr. Auld. Mr. Auld had never been his favorite person, but Frederick could say that he was amazed when Mr. Auld said that he would be taking Frederick up to Maryland to learn a new trade. Frederick would be lying if he said he wasn’t going to miss his friends, so Mr. Auld let him say goodbye. Saying goodbye to his friends was extremely hard, but Frederick promised them that he would not waste his second chance.
