General Zaroff invites Rainsford to have a drink, he enters a dinning room with medival magnificence. They begin to have a good conversation.
All I want is to feel excitement when hunting
Rainsford found the General a very thoughtful host but he found one thing very odd about him, every time he looked up from his plate he found the General studying him.
As the two men continued to talk, Rainsford discovered that General Zaroff knows quite a lot about him. He has read all of his books and studied them emensly.
General Zaroff tells Rainsford about all of the animals that he has hunted and how none of them have been that much of a challenge for him. He craves the excitement but he hasn’t found it yet.
General Zaroff continues to tell Rainsford that no animal was enough of a challenge for him and that he needed something more of a challenge, he needed to invent a new animal.
Rainsford was very surprised “a new animal, you’re joking!” Zaroff describes his perfect animal, Rainsford tries to think of what could possibly meet his expectations. General says “I just need an animal that can reason”. “No animal can reason” says Rainsford
