In 1834, President Jackson regulated a law that gave Native Americans their own land in which white settlers were not prohibited. This land was know as Indian Territory.
By the 1850s Gold and Silver was found in Indian Territory, and so the settlers demanded the land back. Native Americans were placed in Reservations.
The Sioux Indians began to resist against the settlers and fought for their rights.
Because of the resistance, the settlers killed many Native Americans. This is event is known as the Sand Creek Massacre.
Peace was finally established in 1868 with the Treaty of Fort Laramie. This treaty prevented roads being built on Indian land, and the Sioux agrred to live on reservations.
The Bureau Indian affairs was created to handle any problems with the Indians and Settlers in the future.
