The Delaware River separated the British n Trenton and the Americans, and the soliers guarding it did not expect the Americans to cross the water. The water was really cold and they had to take off their shoes
On Christmas night, December 25th, Washington secretly led his troops across the icy river. Soldiers shivered as spray from the river froze on their faces. Once ashore, they walked through the very cold snow, and some of the soldiers had no shoes!
