  • It was in June of 1778 that the longest battle of the Revolution took place. George Washington would fight Sir Henry Clinton. In the blistering heat. George did not want to fight much more than a small battle but Sir Henry Clinton and his army lured them in.
  • The battle lasted all day a confused patriot general Charles Lee made a retreat order which angered Washington and he took complete control of the army. This mistake allowed the British into New York.
  • Washington planned to continue fighting in the morning except the British troops slipped away during the night, the battle is considered inconclusive but was an ultimate win for the colonists. The fact that the British were able to get to New York was important it led to future battles because they were able to stay in the colonies.
