When Manuel was walking to school the morning of the day before the show, he was nervous. He knew he wanted to do it for the fame but as it came closer he was really nervous. When he got to school he realized he forgot his math homework, but luckily he didn't need it that day.
Manuel went to bed that night feeling confident. He said prayers that it would go well and that he wouldn't fail like his second grade project. Manuel felt really good about it even though he had no time practice that night.
During Manuel´s performance the record got stuck and was forced to sing ¨La Bamba¨ over and over about 20 times. After all, the show must go on! Afterwards his family was so proud! Manuel was happy to see his siblings jealous of him.
Gary Soto is the author of the story ¨La-Bamba¨. In his youth he worked in the fields of the San Joaquin Valley. Gary Soto taught at the University of California. He lives in Northern California and divides his time between Berkeley and Fresno California.
