Maui was wondering one one night. Where does fire come from? So Maui went from village to village and put out every last fire burning.
In the morning Taranga said someone will have to go to mahuika the goddess of fire. So Maui said he would go.
So Maui set off, when he was leaving Taranga said be careful. Even though you are a descendant of mahuika she will not take kindly of you if you try and trick her.
Maui arrived at the cave entrance. Before he entered he said a special karakia to him for protection.
Maui entered the cave. Mahuika shouted who dares to enter my dwelling. Maui explained who he was and that all the fires went out. He said could I please have of your fingernails of fire. She gave one to him willingly Maui took and then he wondered where will fire come if she had none left? So Maui dropped the finger nail in the stream. He went and said I tripped and dropped it. She gave another one to him. He kept dropping it in the stream and coming back with different excuses. Mahuika kept giving him fingernails until she was down to her last one.
Maui continued this until Mahuika realised that she was being tricked. When he returned to ask for another, Mahuika was furious. Mahuika thew the flame on the ground with anger. Flames rose up all around Maui and then he transformed into a giant hawk. The flames rose so high Maui wings turned glowing red. Maui dived towards the stream but the immense heat boiled the water. So Maui called to the rain god tawhirimatea. Rain fell from the sky and put the fire out. After that mahuika lost heaps of her power. When Maui returned to the village he only had a bunch of dry wood. Then he showed the villages how to use friction to make fire.
