Nicola Ceausescu the Communist leader in 1965, and his wife Elena set up a dictatorial regime in Romania-with an iron grip. They used secret police to crush all dissent. Later on nonetheless, opposition to Ceausescu's regime grew.
Ceausescu's "economic" policies led to a major drop in living standards, including food shortages especially bread, flour, and sugar. Ceausescu plan for rapid urbanization like the program "bulldozing" entire villages..angered the Romanian people even more
One incident in this "program" ignited the flames of a revolution. In December 1989, the secret police murdered thousands of men, women, and children who were peacefully demonstrating. The army later on refused to support any more repression. Ceausescu and his wife were captured on December 22, and executed on Christmas Day...a new government was quickly formed.
