  • Louie, His Cousin and His Other Cousin
  • Meme Ortiz
  • In the chapter Meme Ortiz Esperanza describes a tree in the back of Meme's house as "Huge, with fat arms." She explains it like this, because the tree has big, huge branches. (Cisneros 22)
  • In the chapter Louie, His Cousin and His Other Cousin Esperanza describes Louie's cousin's car. "The nose of the Cadillac was all pleated like an alligators." She explains it like this, because the car was all wrinkled and long in the front. It wasn't an actual alligators nose. (Cisneros 25)
  • In the chapter Gil's furniture Esperanza had described a music box as running your fingers across the teeth of a metal comb. Esperanza says this because the music box make a sound, like a plucking kind of sound, and as if you were running your fingers across a metal comb. (Cisneros 20)
