Reuven and Danny, two boys on opposing teams at a baseball game, not only differ in teams but also beliefs. Reuven being an Orthodox Jew and Danny a Hasidic Jew, it sparks an even bigger rivalry between the two teams. In a sudden fit of smugness, Danny hits Reuven's pitch to him directly at his face.
Danny comes to the hospital where Reuven was sent to, and finds out his eye had a piece of glass from his glasses stuck in it after being hit in the face. Danny goes to make amends with Reuven, but Reuven doesn't accept his apology at first. The next day, Reuven accepts Danny's apology and a beautiful friendship blossoms.
As their friendship grows as they are together, and Danny begins to read Freud, a book extremely against his beliefs. Danny is a "heir" to being the next religious leader, so Danny's father can go ballistic if he finds out. Danny does not want to take his father's position; Reuven and Danny hide in the library as a result.
Much later, Reuven begins to believe in Zionism, which also goes against the beliefs of Danny's father. Reuven's father starts a rally and gives a speech heavily supporting Zionism, which makes Danny's father not allow the two of them to hang out. Danny also begins to devise a plan to not take his father's position.
Danny finally gets the courage to ask his dad to allow him to pursue psychology rather than Hasidism, and his father, though disappointed, agrees. Since Danny can no longer take his father's place, his little brother will be getting the position.
