Workers go on strike at the McCormick Harvester Co. in Chicago, Ill. The workers demands are higher wages, shorter workday, safer working conditions, and an end to child labor.

The owner of the company is Mr. McCormick. He is extremely angry that his workers are on strike. McCormick is losing a lot of money every day that the strike continues. He has to do something to end the strike!

The Chicago Police arrived at the scene of the riot. The police officers tried to stop the fighting. As the riot continued, four of the striking workers were shot and killed by police. This angered the striking workers and their families. They decided to hold a rally at Haymarket Square the following day
