-In 1721 Montesquieu received fame through his book Persian Letters -Published his most famous book The Spirit of Laws which was about having three different power branches -Came up with the idea of separation of power (Document 4a)
-Title of Baron de Montesquieu -Born in France in 1689 -Attended a catholic school when he was young -Became a lawyer in 1716 -Inherited his uncle's title and fortune -Many found his personality amusing, but doubted his abilities. They changed their minds once he released his book.

-He wrote The Social Contract -Was an advocate for representative democracy -In his book he clearly expressed his thoughts and feelings on the government "This is the fundamental problem of which the Social Contract provides the solution." (Doument 6a).
