  • hm... why am I getting this strange feeling?
  • Mrs. Mallard, a woman who has heart problems, is hearing terrible news in her living room about her husband's death. Her sister, Josephine, tells her the news slowly. Josephine's husband, Richard, feels very sad and remembers about what he saw in the newspaper office. On the newspaper it said Mr. Mallard's name, Brently Mallard, listed under "Killed".
  • Wait a second...I'm... free!free!free! Nobody to control me or tell me what to do!
  • After hearing about the news, Mrs. Mallard goes to her room, leaving everyone else behind. She lies on her roomy armchair and feels exhausted and motionless. She looks out her window and breathes in the air. In this moment she is very sad and sobbing and can't believe that her husband died.
  • Free! Body and Soul Fre-
  • uh...
  • A few moments pass and Mrs. Mallard begins to calm down. She then gets this strange feeling. There is something coming to her and she is waiting for it, fearfully. As she looks out the window, she hears the sound of nature and then realizes something. Something she tries to fight back. The feeling of happiness possesses her.
  • *thud*
  • *gasp*
  • *gasp*
  • *gasp*
  • Mrs. Mallard rises up from her armchair. She can't help but get this feeling of joy. In excitement, she begins to realize all the possible things she could do now that her husband is no longer there to control her. She spreads her arms out and open to welcome a new life of her own. While she enjoys herself, Josephine worries that she may make herself ill. After drinking in a very elixir of life through the open window, Mrs. Mallard finally opens the door for her sister.
  • Mrs. Mallard and Josephine, begin to walk to down the stairs. Mrs. Mallard feels better than ever before. She is fantasizing and thinking about her freedom, but just as she makes it to the bottom of the stairs she sees Richard in shock. Josephine is confused and doesn't know what to think. Mrs. Mallard's dreams and plans for the future is ruined as soon as she sees the face of her husband, Mr. Mallard, who is as the front door of her house.
  • Mr. Mallard steps inside, but does not get a welcoming reaction. He is confused and is not aware of everyone thinking that he is dead. Mrs. Mallard, out of shock, suddenly collapses to the floor. Everyone gasps and sees that Mrs. Mallard is dead. When the doctors arrived, they said that she had died of heart disease, of the joy that kills. This portrays that Mrs. Mallard would rather be dead than live the rest of her life with her husband.
