This Storyboard was created to teach people about the European explorations. What came of it. Things like that.
What could be out there, past this vast ocean?
Leif Erickson came to Canada to find more land for the other Vikings who had come to Greenland in hopes of a better life, but just got disappointed.
I won't be able to travel now... must ask for more money from the British!
Explorers came to Canada because they were looking to expand and find more land. These people were looking for resources, as they were depleting what they had back in their home countries. People have been exploring Canada since 40 000 B.C, all the way to around the 1600's. Our country saw many come and some go during this time in history.
The very first explorers were the vikings. They spent some time in our shores of what they called Vineland. Known today as, L'Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland. These people were the first to come into contact with the First Nations. Due to conflicts, they didn't stay too long. The vikings explored Canada around 986 to 1000 AD.
Lets defeat them together, and then we will trade our pellets with you!
After the vikings, Canada had visits from the British. The first British sailor that came to Canada was Christopher Columbus. Columbus sailed to the Americas in 1492. One of his ships, the Santa Maria had been driven into a coral reef on December 24, 1492, by a cabin boy near the shores of present day Haiti. The British sent John Cabot five years later, he didn't create settlements.

Finally, it was the Frenchmen's turn. In 1534, Jacques Cartier explored the St Lawrence gulf and river. In 1603, they sent Samuel de Champlain. Champlain was a very strong leader, and loving husband. His wife, Helene Boullé; she was only twelve years old, 31 years younger to Champlain, they never had children of their own, they just "adopted" (kidnapped) three Montagnais girls; later when he passed away, she became a nun.
In 1603, Champlain explored the St Lawrence and created Port Royal. Within 5 years of coming to Canada,Quebec city is formed. Due to his great desire for riches, he made alliances with the Huron. He even shot dead two of the leaders of a nearby opposing tribe. The Iroquios. From that day on, they were best of buds, until the Europeans got grabby.
How did we get to the residential schooling system, if we were best buds? The early explorers, got too greedy. Wanting more land, and more people speaking English, they set up schools designed to beat the Native out of a child. To this day, we are still trying to fix the problems that these institutions created. Schools closed as late as 1998. For around 100 years, these schools were active.
