  • A Major Conflict Arises
  • You know as well as I do that you can't do this! It wasn't in the agreement! Change your law immediately!
  • I have the right to appoint Church officials because I know who would be right for which job. So let me be!
  • Blah, blah, do I really care?
  • Payback
  • You can't do that!
  • Hmm...what shall I do? Oh I know!
  • I declare you no longer pope!
  • This is Insanity!!
  • This is insanity, I don't know what to do!
  • No. I know, I will remove him from the church! Isn't it the best idea?
  • Yes, it is! Excommunication will create fear in him and he will obey you!
  • How about you remove him from the church?
  • Henry IV didn't like the way Pope Gregory VII ruled. He considered it his duty to appoint Church officials but Pope Gregory banned everyone except himself from doing so. This meant breaking the agreement made by Charlemagne and Pope Leo III long ago.
  • Realization
  • Please, oh please forgive me! I'll do whatever you want, just don't take away my salvation!
  • This will be a great payback humiliation.
  • Henry was so mad at Pope Gregory that he declared that he could no longer be pope.
  • The Cost
  • Pope Gregory in return for what he got from the Holy Roman Emperor excommunicated him, removing him from the Church and therefore salvation. He also forbid Henry's subjects from obeying him.
  • All's Well That Ends Well...
  • (...) The Pope and Emperor shall be equal leaders of the community from now on. The Emperor as the secular leader and the pope as the sacred leader of the community. They shall live without interference in the others business and they shan't break this sacred agreement for as long as they live.
  • Henry realized just how much power and authority the Roman Catholic Church and Pope Gregory had, so he begged for forgiveness and he was once again allowed in the Church.
  • I must do whatever it takes!
  • Oh alright, if I must. But you'll have to do a little thing. It really is nothing at all.
  • But the only way Henry was readmitted to the Church was if he stood barefoot in the snow for three days, which was just what he supposedly did.
  • I have to do this and I WILL do it! I am not weak and I will regain my rank and my salvation!!
  • It was a major humiliation for Henry, but he fought through it and with it he 'rewrote' the agreement made long ago that the Pope had broken.
