  • A very long time ago a man named uenuku came over two beautiful women singing a beautiful waita there names were hinepukohurangi the mist maiden And hinewai the morning dew. He would get to know hinepukohurangi more
  • After a while, he fell in love with her but there was one small problem: she was a mist maiden which would mean he could only see her at night. After a while, his friends called Maukatere and Te Hau started to notice that he wasn't hanging out with them as much.
  • He said “it's because he has a girlfriend” all his friends laughed “prove it,” they said. He explained that she could only show at night and they became more spectacle so he made a plan to show her to his friends. The next morning he blocked the windows so the light couldn't come in and got his friends to see her. When she realised it was a trap she felt betrayed.
  • “Aue!” she cried “you tricked me” she made a promise “for as long as you are alive you will never lay eyes on me again”. His friends wanted to help him so they told him that an old man once told them that the gods live in the ‘land of Maui, a place called Aotearoa and that he must go there to find Hinepukohurangi.
  • They traveled for days until they arrived in a beautiful place called aotearoa they pulled their waka ashore at a place called rakautara and traveled north. Uenuku and Te hau traveled up the maunga to see if they could find her. One day they came to the roof of a huge mountain uenuku decided that he would climb to the top of the huge maunga in hopes that he might be able to see hinepukohurangi. But he must do it alone. Te hau promised that he would wait for uenuku. “I found a beautiful place nearby where i can set up camp and sell kumara”
  • he hugged his friend goodbye and began up the maunga. He climbed higher and higher as he got close to the top of the mountain. The weather started to change and became cold and icy. It became too much to handle. In his last moment he laid down and dreamed of hinepukohurangi before falling asleep. Far away in the land of the gods, Hinepukohurangi felt uenuku love for her. Even though she vowed to never see him again she asked her people if she could see him again. They granted her wish and she appeared on the mountain top with uenuku and laid down with him once more. Their love joined them together with land growing out of the earth as they became tall and proud. They became tapuae-o-uenuku. They still stand today watching over the people of the wairau and if you're lucky the gods paint a rainbow in the sky to remind you of how this place came to be.
