  • My son may have been born into slavery, but I am determined that one day, we shall all be free.
  • The year was 1820. The place was Maryland.
  • My master was a cruel man.  He didn't care about anything but getting more money!
  • You better work those slaves hard.  I need lots of cotton so I can get lots of money.
  • We need to escape from this plantation!
  • I heard about it Daddy. It's called the Underground Railroad and a woman named Harriet Tubman is a conductor.
  • I hear talk about a woman named Moses that helps slaves get out of the South and get to freedom in the North.
  • After many years of planning, the time finally came for this family to make their run for freedom.
  • We can't go to the next station yet, we must hide here until it's safe.
  • The riverbank will make a mighty good road The dead trees show you the way Left foot, peg foot traveling on Follow the drinking gourd
  • We're free!  Now I want to do my part to help others.  I will spread the word.  Slavery must be destroyed.
