WHY? I thought of you as a different person unlike my family and you do this.
He was always threatened by his family if he didn't do what is best for his family's reputation. He would be beaten and wouldn't be feed. He was always frightened about what his family would do to him or what they thought of him. So, therefore, he has always tried his best to impress his family with whatever he did. Sadly, he let them manipulate his life. Later on, this pattern of passivity continues when he marries Christiana, a manipulative person who had no respect towards others only in what she thought was best for her.
He was regularly manipulated ever since he was little he would always need to obey orders no matter what the conflict was. Eternally considering he has always performed what others say even though he believed it was corrupt he would always be overthrown by others. He was believed to be a vulnerable person to everyone.
He figures out how his wife was a horrible person who was trying to win his trust. He sees his wife break a glass silverware and says the maid broke it. So his wife asks him to fire her when she hasn't done anything wrong just because she was too old for her and felt that she needed a better one that was younger and who could clean better when everything was perfectly clean. Charles is manipulated again by her begging so he decides to fire her so that she can be happy. He then understands why people were going around saying rumors about his wife not being any good for his family sake, he realizes people were telling the truth.
He makes a bad decision to marry Christiana and has two kids. The children are twins a boy and girl. He realizes Christiana manipulates people to late by which she makes them do the commands she gives. Charles is therefore indecisive of what he should do. So this worries him because he thinks his wife will manipulate him into choosing what fate to take.
