Moshe and Aharon came to Pharaoh to tell him that Gd sent them to take the Jews out of Egypt into the desert. The Pharaoh didn't allow the Jews to leave and he asked about Hashem, because he never heard of anybody with that kind of power.
The Jews were beaten for not doing their job perfectly. The officers were hitting them and yelling at them to finish their jobs even if was for an impossible task.
The leaders of Bnei Yisrael came to Pharaoh and cried out to him, asking why he is punishing the nation so hardly, when the Egyptians are sinning themselves. Pharaoh then answers back saying go back to work and give the amount of bricks that you were asked to give in the first place.
The representatives of the Jews came up to Moshe and Aharon and told them that when they came to speak to Pharaoh, they have just done worse for the Jewish people. Moshe is upset and confused at why Hashem's plan didn't work.
