Storyboard Text

  • The Feudal System was a society where the King owned most of the land and gave it to his leading nobles in return for their loyalty and military service. The peasants (serfs) farmed the land of the nobles and in return the peasants gave their nobles their labor and received part of what they produced to keep for themselves. Because people were born with a permanent position in society, they never moved into another class.
  • What is Feudalism?
  • The King:
  • "Because I am the King of this land, I am in complete control of the feudal system. I grant a fief to my lords, upon an oath. in return for the fief I give them, the lords must give me their loyalty and military services in return."
  • "Woof woof!"
  • The Lord:
  • "Because I was granted a fief by the King, I must take care of this land and give my loyalty and military services back to the King. As a Lord, I must grant a fief to the vassal , who in return will provide me with military service and counsel."
  • The Vassal:
  • "Because I am the Vassal of this land, I must provide military aid to the Lord, using whatever equipment I can obtain by virtue of the revenues from the fief I own. I must also provide my Lord with counsel. If the Lord faces a major decision. I must summon all my vassals and hold a council."
  • The Serf:
  • "Because I am just a Serf, I must farm all the land of my Lords and provide them with food and labor whenever they need it. Not only do I do all the work, but I must also give rent money to the Lord. However, in return. the Lord offers us protection and some of the food I farm, I get to keep it for myself and my family."
  • Even though it might seem like a well-developed concept, Feudalism was anything but! Often the lords decided that they were as rich as the king, making them go against the King's wishes. Sometimes the king was so weak he just had to let that happen. Most of the people in the feudal system were poor peasants who worked the land six days a week and were dead by the age of thirty. Over time, because of its many flaws, Feudalism became less and less popular among nations, bringing the system to its end.
  • End of Feudalism
