  • What are the characteristics of true friendship?
  • “But not us! An’ why? Because . . . because I got you to look after me, and me to look after you, and that’s why." Page 7
  • What is an individuals duty to others? 
  • “He’s a good skinner. He can rassel grain bags, drive a calivator. He can do anything. Just give him a try.” Page 11
  • What is empathy? Is it an important characteristic?
  • "A guy goes nuts if he ain’t got nobody. Don’t make no difference who the guy is, long’s he's with you. I’ tell ya.” Page 35
  • In this scene, George and Lennie are outside by the fire cooking beans. Lennie is telling  George that they will always have each other. Steinbeck uses this to answer the essential question by showing us that friends help and encourage each other during difficult times. The author wants us to understand that friendship is about supporting each other.
  • In this scene, George and Lennie are at the bosses office because they want a job. Steinbeck uses this to say that people have a duty to be kind to each other.  The author shows this when George gives good complements about Lennie. The author wants us to understand that friendship is about talking positively  about your friends.
  • In this scene, Crooks and Lennie are in the barn and Crooks  tell Lennie about  when he grew up with his brothers. Steinbeck uses this to show that empathy is understanding the feelings of others because Crooks understands how Lennie feels about George. Steinbeck wants us to understand that empathy helps people understand their friends.
