  • CLIMATE AND GEOGRAPHY 
  • WHY THE AREA WAS SETTLED
  • SOCIAL LIFE
  • Bitterly cold winters and mild summers.  Land was flat close to the coastline but became hilly and mountainous farther inland. Soil was generally rocky, making farming difficult.
  • RELIGION
  • People wanted to come to the New England colonies to practice their own religions. It was known as religion freedom.
  • POLITICAL LIFE
  • The main economic activities were logging, whaling, and fishing.  Jobs were shipbuilding, fishing, and whaling. For entertainment there was community dances, barnyard picnics, church gathers and sewing.
  • IMPORTANT EVENTS
  • The colonists were mostly Puritans who led strict lives. 
  • The New England Colonies governments elected their own legislature, they were all democratic, they all had a governor, governor's court, and a court system.
  • In 1702, New Jersey became a royal colony. George I was crowned king in 1714. George II was crowned in 1727.
