  • Contrition: Contrition begins before the celebration of the sacrament. It requires sincere examination of conscience to recall the various ways offence has been given to God by breaking God’s laws.
  • I have committed this offence and I feel very guilty of what I have done.
  • Confession: During the sacrament, the person ‘owns up to’ or states all mortal sins and regular venial sins. There is no need to confess all venial sins, but only those for which the spiritual gifts of the sacrament are most needed.
  • Father, I have stolen a hat from store.
  • Satisfaction: In the sacrament of Penance, satisfaction has two parts: the penance and the prayer of sorrow.
  • The Penance: The priest states the satisfaction to be made. This is called the penance. Usually it is related to what has been confessed
  • So you have stolen an item from a stand
  • Prayer Of Sorrow: After the penance has been given, the priest asks the person tosay a Prayer of Sorrow (or Act of Contrition). This can be a prayer of the person's own words or a formal prayer such as Rite Of Reconciliation.
  • Lord Jesus son of the living God have mercy on me, a sinner.
  • Absolution: The Preist sets free the person from their sins. This is called 'Absolution'.
  • Thank you, Father.
  • The Lord has freed you from your sins. Go in peace.
