  • What Happened Before
  • We Gather in Philedelphia
  • Thank you all for coming to make some minor changes to the Articles of Confederation.
  • Virginia Plan
  • But that means smaller states will barely get anything!
  • I created the Virginia plan to make a more civil nation and government. This way, we can receive more delegates and votes in congress.
  • Because of the unanimous fear among U.S. Citizens about creating a "too powerful government," the government that's under the previous Articles of Confederation was unable to tax the people or enforce laws; since this was in place, it led to enormous issues in the country.
  • The New Jersey Plan
  • Wait, that means bigger states won't get as much delegates and votes!
  • I have created the New Jersey Plan in response to the Virginia Plan so American states will receive equal representation
  • Problems grew and grew so delegates had to take action. Basically, all the delegates from different states met in Philadelphia to discuss revisions about the Articles of Confederation.
  • The Great Compromise
  • I, Roger Sherman, propose a two-house legislature. The lower house will be called the house of representatives to represent the general population. The Senate will be the upper house and will have two member selected from each state.
  • But when an official was decided and the meeting began, James Madison, on behave of all Virginia Citizens, created the Virginia Plan where the number of votes that each states received in Congress  was to be based by Population.
  • The 3/5 Compromise
  • In response to the Virginia Plan, William Paterson created the New Jersey Plan to contradict the fact of having votes in congress to be based off of population. The New Jersey Plan gives only 1 vote for every state so it is equal representation.
  • This argument over which plan should be establish into our national government has been going for about 2 to 3 months. Then Roger Sherman proposed the great compromise which basically is a combination of the Virginia Plan and the New Jersey Plan.
  • Okay, will call it the Great Compromise
  • In the 3/5 compromise,  it's basically letting 3/5 of the slave population to contribute to the total state population unlike before when none of the slaves considered part of the state population. This means the small southern states will have more people on behave of there state to vote in congress..
