Storyboard Text

  • Haha not happening. This would be another free state. Good luck making it a state without the South's support.
  • Look at all this beautiful land, we should make it part of the United States. Everybody would love to live here.
  • Kansas and Nebraska are both free states! They're both above the Missouri Compromise Line.
  • No way! That would upset the balance of free and slave states in the Union
  • Nebraska needs to become a state so that settlers can move into it, but the South doesn't want another nonslave state
  • It is proposed that Nebraska be split into 2 territories, Kansas and Nebraska, but they are still both above the 36 30 parallel.
  • Stephen Douglas proposes the Kansas Nebraska Act, which would repeal the Missouri Compromise. After this passes, divisions between the North and South become greater.
  • The concept of popular sovereignty was debated, until eventually the Missouri Compromise was deemed unconstitutional . People could vote for whether or not the state would allow slavery.
  • People rushed across the borders to vote illegally in order to sway the state's decision on slavery.
  • Eventually, the conflict between antislavery and proslavery supporters rose to such a level that Kansas was not allowed to become a state.
