Nine long months later, after much debate... Congress passed the Compromise of 1850
The Compromise of 1850 states 1. California can enter the Union as a free state. 2. Let the people of the area decide how to organize the remaining land from Mexico into two territories, Utah and New Mexico. 3. Discontinue the slave trade in Washington, D.C. 4. Strengthen the Fugitive Slave Law by requiring Northerners to return runaway slaves to their Southern owners.
This compromise did not satisfy many... in fact, it angered a lot of people.
As a Northerner, I refuse to return runaway slaves to their Southern owners. It is not moral and free blacks could be reenslaved.
I, South Carolina Senator Calhoun, will warn that arguing over slavery is hurting the Union. I suggest we create a North and South President.
