"The was nowhere else for Max Vandenberg to go. It was them. Hans and Rosa Hubermann. Liesel had never seen them look at each other so much, or with such solemnity." pg 209
" Liesel opened one of her books and began to read. The book on top of the pile The Whistler and she spoke it aloud to help her concentrate. The opening paragraph was numb in her ears." pg 381

Max arrives at the Hubermanns and Liesel is drawn to his book, or the fact that she wants to take it. Max and Liesel begin to bond over books. Max eventually makes two books for her.
The road back
The air raids start and Liesel reads for the people in the shelter. Max leaves them and Hans and Alex Stiener are drafted into the army. Rosa is all depressed and worried all the time since Hans left. Liesel is paranoid that Max has been captured.
Liesels reward is that she gets to go and read all the books she wants at Ilsa Hermanns. After Ilsa found out about the book stealing she let Liesel come and read whenever she wanted. She also told Liesel to use the front door instead of sneaking in. Liesel was too scared to go.
" Now it was Hans Hubermann's turn. He knocked four times and the book thief answered." pg 492
Hans was injured and returns back from the war. The story seems like it's going to be coming to an end all happy like. But nope. Max is captured and Liesel sees him in the streets and gets whipped. They all pray for Max's safety.
" The bodies of Mama and Papa both lying tangled in the grave bedsheets of Himmel Street." pg 536
A bomb hits himmel street and everyone but Liesel dies. Liesel feels guilt that she didn't die. She kisses Rudy and says good bye to Hans and Rosa. She goes and stays with Ilsa. She feels like she has to leave this life she had behind.
"They hugged and cried and fell to the floor." pg 548
Max survives the concentration camp. Liesel works in Alex Stiener's shop and Max arrives there one day, they hug and cry. Then Death concludes the whole thing with Liesel greeting him like a friend when he comes and gets her in her old age.
