My dear Fortunato, I have some amontillado on me.
No matter what, I must follow the family motto.
The story starts with Montresor seeking revenge as he believed that Fortunato has insulted him. Fortunato is established as a wine connoisseur, but also a man with a bit of an ego when it comes to his work. Fortunato and Montresor meet in the carnival. To appeal to his ego, Montresor talks about An amontillado and was able to get Fortunato to follow him to his “wine vault”
Fortunato follows Montresor through a staircase leading to the “vault”. Fortunato has been coughing so much that Montresor used it to oppose his ego. Fortunato still continues and took some wine he was offered. Montresor was also revealed to be a mason during this scene. Eventually they make it down to the catacomb.
Montresor allowed Fortunato to go ahead first. Fortunato gets stopped by a rock. This gave Montresor the opportunity to trap Fortunato in the catacombs. Montresor then went on to grab some building materials.
Montresor continues to build a wall to cover up Fortunato. Montresor also notices that the intoxication has worn off of Fortunato. Fortunato continues to do long screeches and screams.
Montresor makes fun of the situation that he put Fortunato in. The building is also finished. Lastly we discover that no mortal has ever disturbed the catacomb filled with bones for half of a century.
