Storyboard Text

  • This is true the larger states wanted a bicameral legislature which would later be called the Virginia plan and the smaller states wanted 1 vote per state and their idea was called the New Jersey plan. But along with the population larger states wanted slaves to be included as well to have an even more advantage.
  • Hi I am Carson and this is my friend Marco.
  • We are here to tell you a story of the history of the government and how it changed to bewhat it is and has been for a long time
  • This is the beginning of it all. America has just gained its freedom from Britain but we dont have a government yet
  • So our nation leaders came together and thought about what type of government they wanted but first they needed proof of their new independence and this proof was called the Declaration of Independence.
  • After they gained their freedom and settled down the newly freed people of the 13 colonies realized that they need to establish a way that one person will not have too much power but still be able to control the people. So they came up with the Articles of Confederation
  • Yes the Articles of Confederations were established but they were too weak to hold the people because of Shay's Rebellion. This led to the constitutional convention. bigger states wanted more influence in congress to gain votes and smaller states wanted influence in congress so that the votes will be equal.
  • They larger states did want to take advantage of their larger size but the the new government did not allow this because they came up with the Great Compromise and the Three-Fifiths Compromise.
  • These compromises would not be possible if we did not have our Three Branches of Government. The Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branches all hold accountability for each other and this is called Checks and Balances and they also share the power which is called separation of powers.
  • This is very true but this still was not the end of their problems with this newly freed country now they needed a new Constitution but they were not sure how they should go about it. This lead to a separation of two groups called the Federalist and the Anti-Federalist
  • The Bill of Rights was the first amendments that helped give greater constitutional protection over individual rights and the ratification is what made this happen because North Carolina ratified the constitution.
  • Thats the story of how the government changed to be what it is today
