It was September 13 1848, Phineas Gage was just getting ready to explode an area of rock to continue building the railroad. Little did he know about the tragic accident that was going to occur.
Phineas was looking away for a quick second and all of a sudden the rod hits the granite and explodes! The pole goes into his head and it happens all so quickly.
Phineas is taken to Cavendish hotel where he is living to help fix up his wound. Dr. Harlow shaves Phineas's hair to examine the wound further and then bandages up his head and wound.
Phineas is told to take rest in bed for two weeks since Dr. Harlow gave him some medications. These medications made Phineas throw up and make him go to the bathroom a lot.
After a while Phineas recovered and got back to speaking clearly, singing, reading and doing math . He survived this tragedy and was left with a scar on his forehead.
Dr. Harlow wanted to give Phineas a little test and offered him $1,000 for the pebbles which he collected. When Phineas angrily declined the offer, Dr. Harlow felt like Phineas was not himself anymore. Dr. Harlow realized that it would take a while for Phineas to get back to being himself after this injury.
