At age 11, Olivia and her family were brutally attacked by a pair of men that broke into their house. Olivia and her parents were tortured for hours.
I don't know what is wrong with Olivia. She keeps having these terrible nightmares and I think she is having flashbacks during the day. She's not doing well in school and she hardly communicates with anyone. She just seems withdrawn. And she jumps out of skin at certain noises. I don't know what to do.
And then the intruders shot them all.
Olivia managed to pull through after sustaining life threatening injuries, but her parents did not.
For months after the trauma, those taking care of Olivia have noticed some distressing symptoms. They decide it is time to take Olivia to talk to someone.
After taking Olivia to a psychiatrist, it is determined that she has PTSD.
After months of cognitive-behavioral therapy and through stress management, Olivia is doing better at managing her PTSD. Her foster parents note that she seems happier and she is doing better in school and is making new friends.
