My Life is a Roller Cocoaster
Hi! My name is Cocoa and I come from a pod in the Southern part of the Americas. Cocoa beans like me were originally used by the Aztecs and the Mayans. The privileged had us as a drink, and others used us in cooking.
One day, around 1492, a man came to my home. He was weirdly dressed and looked around the rainforest for a while. I heard his friends call him Christopher Columbus.
The next day the Aztec chief turned my family into a drink which the Columbus guy drank. Then Columbus took me! He put me on a ship along with some of my neighbors, like corn and chile pepper.
I was brought to a place in Europe called Spain where my fellow cocoa and cocao beans were turned into a different drink. It was made by mixing the cocoa bean paste with boiling water and spices like cinnamon and nutmeg.
In 1615, a Spanish princess brought me and some of my friends to her new husband, the French king. My friends were created into an iced drink while I was passed on to Italy and eventually all around Europe.
But perhaps our biggest, long-term impact was the chocolate bar. In 1875, I finally settled down in Switzerland where I was made into the first milk chocolate ever created. Now I am enjoyed by people all around the world!
