Andrew Jackson and his rival in the election John Q. Adams ran against each other in 1824. Although Jackson got the votes of the people, John Adams won because congress voted him. It is believed that Clay had helped convince congress to elect Adams.
1828- South Carolina Nullification
The Tariff of Abomination was created and passed under Andrew Jackson to protect the north's industry and the north loved it. The south was outraged.
when Jackson was first elected, he invited the "common man" to the white house to celebrate. He then placed his friends in the cabinet and high positions, this was called the "spoil system".
South Carolina is furious about the tariffs and threatens to secede from the United States. Jackson gives them a second chance but they still resist and Jackson sends his troops to enforce the tariff.
