  • Now, do you think you understand the difference?
  • Yes, both personal space and territoriality are very important to our well-being and infringing on these can have great negative influences on persons.
  • I do.  But that means you can understand why Shania's actions really upset me.
  • Good morning ladies. What are you guys talking about?
  • I think so. It's like protecting your property, right?
  • Dad, have you ever heard about territoriality>
  • How about we go to the living room and i'll tell you.
  • You see dad, territoriality is a set of behavours and cognitions an organism or group exhibit based on percieved ownership of physical space.
  • It is the poces of demarcating your space for protection, security and peace of mind.
  • So an example would be how i feel about our home and i would want to protect it and you all.
  • Exactly! The locks and are actual barriers, items such as the flowers are symbolic barriers, lights are example of traces, and the dogs, provide detectability.
  • Now there are 3 types of territories : Primary seconday and Public.
  • A primary territory is a space controlled by and identified with the person or group who uses it exclusively and to whom it is essential. E.g. a bedroom or home (APA Dictionary, 2018).
  • That's why we have a fence and alarm system, locks on the door and our dogs; to keep intuders out.
  • Actual barriers, symbolic barriers, traces and detectability are the four main classes of environmental features. Architects often consider these factors when creating a safe and comfortable environment.
  • The APA dictionary defines a secondary territory as a space routinely used by a person or group who does not control or use it exclusively. (APA Dictionary, 2018). E.g. a school library or community golf course
  • A secondary territory is a shared space used by a particular group.
