Langston Hughes, was born in Joplin, Missouri. James and Carrie Hughes were his parents; Both bookkeepers. Langston lived in many different places. His dad, James, moved to mexico. After that, James and Carrie divorced.
Langston's mother, needed a job. She left Langston with his maternal grandmother to find one. His grandmother told him stories about his ancestors fighting for equal rights. She did this to show that he could help African-Americans be equal. His grandmother died when Langston was twelve.
In his early years, he went public schools in Kansas. He sat in the back of the classroom with all the other black kids. He didn't like this. Because of talents in poetry, he became class poet. He loved to write poetry and plays and stories. He was very talented.

The family moved to Ohio. Langston went to Central High School. Later, he attended Columbia University in 1921.
